Cannabis factories are a growing problem
Tuesday 9th June 2009The news has been packed with stories about cannabis factories in British buy-to-let homes of late.
Commuter paper the Metro is running an ongoing feature on the illegal use of rented accommodation by tenants to cultivate super-strength skunk and figures acquired by the BBC under the freedom of information act show that there has been a rise in the number of cannabis factories since 2004.
Now the National Landlords Association (NLA) has stepped into the fray ahead of National Tackling Drugs Week.
The organisation has called on landlords to be wary of the potential uses tenants can put their properties to.
According to the NLA, the damage caused to property is criminals knock through walls and rewire the electrics can amount to tens of thousands of pounds.
The organisation's chairman David Salusbury said: "Cannabis factories are a blight on local communities and make their neighbours' lives a misery.
"We very much welcome any moves to track down where these factories are and shut them down."
According to the BBC, a record number of young people in Britain sought treatment for drug or alcohol problems in 2007-08.
