Landlords should not be 'treated like pantomime villains'
Friday 26th June 2009The National Landlords' Association (NLA) has leant its support to a claim that buy-to-let property investors should not be treated like pantomime villains.
According to lovemoney.com's John Fitzsimons, the rental sector in the UK needs to remain strong and its importance should not be eroded by a lack of support.
He said: "Our blase attitude towards the plight of landlords is not a good thing."
"Home-ownership is not a right, nor is it right for everyone. And while the social rental sector does a good job, I think it is vitally important to have an equally strong private rented sector," he added.
Commenting on the article written by Fitzsimons, David Salusbury, chairman of the NLA, said the recession has already claims a small but growing number of private landlords.
He claimed that if banks continue to repossess homes of those buy-to-letlenders who have fallen into arrears, the fall in rented accommodation will put pressure on social housing and do nothing to avert an increase in homelessness.
According to Shelter, the fall in homelessness in Wales may be reversed as the full impact of the recession is felt.
