Cartel legal partner shut down for suspected dishonesty
Friday 12th March 2010Legal watchdog, the Solicitor’s Regulation Authority (SRA) has shut down Consumer Credit Litigation Solicitors (CCLS), Cartel Client Review’s legal partner.
The SRA said it had acted to protect clients of CCLS because of "suspected dishonesty". This action has no bearing on claims management firm Cartel because the firm is not regulated by the SRA. However, Cartel is the subject of a separate Ministry of Justice investigation.
In a statement, the SRA said it was concerned that CCLS had not been acting in the best interests of clients whose business had been channelled to it by Cartel.
A spokesman from the SRA confirmed an investigation had been ongoing 'for weeks'. The BBC is reporting that the legal firm, which had roughly 100 staff at the start of the year had mostly walked out after being left unpaid for two months. The CCLS offices have been shut since Wednesday this week.
"The intervention protects the immediate position and safeguards documents and clients' money held by this firm," the SRA said.
Claims management customers have been advised to contact Cartel Client Review, law firm Gordons of Bradford or the Citizen’s Advice Bureau for further information.

Report AbuseGet Profile | Greg - You are right, it is a shame because there are genuine cases no doubt. Who will now take any advice or products from an ex CCR Agent? Not me that's for sure, and there will be thousands like me. |
Get Profile | It's important that the activites of Cartel Client Review and its solicitors CCLS are not confused with other reputable companies engaged in litigating on Unenforcable Credit Agreements who are not under threat of any investigations or malfeasance. While the MOJ investigation of Cartel will no doubt follow its course to a conclusion which will result in a media field day or a media retreat, prejudging the outcome helps no one in the financial services industry. Piling into the "I told you so camp" is anything but helpful and so doing diminishes the public's shaky trust in all facets of our industry by association. |
Get Profile | There's no need to throw the baby out with the bath water. I have been following the news on these types of claims closely for the last two years and in fairness CCR have had some successes, which have been reported by the FT, Daily Mail, BBC News etc.and many individuals acting on their own have also had successes against the misdealings of the banks and credit card companies (myself included). I still feel far more ripped off by my credit card companies than I do by CCR and CCLS. Having won my own case against a credit card company (after they failed to file a defence) they have still refused to pay up or to remove a Default from my credit rating, the Court have now said they will not help me with this. It's the supposed regulators that I feel allow too much leeway to big companies and do nothing to help the consumer that I feel is ultimately to blame. |
Get Profile | when will people learn that if something sounds too good to be true it usually is. Hopefully this puts and end to some of our ambulance chasing mentality |
Get Profile | I first complained to the Ministry of Justice in March 2009 about Cartel Client Review and Consumer Credit Litigation Solicitors as my claims were already over a year old and didn't seem to be progressing. I have repeated my complaints several times in the last year but was consistently fobbed off by the MOJ as they were 'busy' etc. They recently contacted me to explain that they can not help me with my complaints but that I needed to complain to the Legal Complaints Service (who refer to the SRA). The LCS told me that while they can investigate my complaint, they can not help me to get a refund of my fee and that to pursue that I need to contact the MOJ. The MOJ have said that as my claim had been passed from CCR on to CCLS they can not help me at all with my complaint or refund of my fee. I have no faith in any of them! |
