Kevin Brennan, Head of Sustainability for VELUX Company Ltd, was forthcoming in his support for the Prime Minister’s £1 billion energy pledge announced last week. Calling it a step in the right direction, he praised Gordon Brown’s action, “This new legislation will allow homeowners across the country to make significant changes to their own homes with the help of grants, allowing them to take responsibility for reducing their own carbon footprint.”

However, he admitted that the initiative to promote energy efficiency was a “small one” and spoke of other ways to reduce carbon emissions in UK housing. “No extra provision has been made for renewable technologies such as solar thermal technology. Over 75% of homes in the UK are suitable for this technology and installing something as simple as a Solar Hot Water System could achieve an annual fuel bill saving of over £200*1 and significantly reduce a home’s carbon emissions by 665kg of CO2 every year.”

In principle, the Government's plan is excellent. My fear is it may follow the disaster known as the 'Better Homes' scheme, which I believe HMG sponsered to the tune of £20 billion, this typically resulted in having double glazing compulsorily installed at 3 times the price available to the retail public. I know this is true-it happened to me! If on the other hand, HMG offers genuine Grants of say 10,20,30% or whatever of Improvement Costs, they definitely have my backing. Some may remember 'Home Improvement' Grants available into the early 80's incl Roofs, Central Heating, Insulation etc of 90% of cost. Don't hold your breath!
