Price comparison sites may have encouraged a boom in people switching motor and home insurance, utility supplier and mobile phone tariffs, but mortgages are proving tougher to crack.

While 19% switched car insurance in the past year, just 2% switched mortgage provider, according to new research from GoCompare.com.

This means that Britons showed more loyalty to their mortgage provider than their employer, with 11% changing jobs last year, and even their partner, with 3% changing their relationship.

Some 16% changed their home insurance, 14% changed their home energy supplier and 8% changed their Isa or savings account, the research showed.

And that is despite a 40% rise in the number of remortgage approvals in the past 12 months.
