OFT shuts 19 lead generation sites

The Office of Fair Trading, helped by website hosting firms, has closed 19 dodgy lead generation sites that sold on data about people looking for loans.

The consumers would almost certainly not have known that their information was being passed on.

The unlicensed sites targeted people with disabilities, the unemployed and those connected to the military.

David Fisher, OFT director of consumer credit, said: “Websites like the ones we have shut down target vulnerable people and those who may not have easy access to credit.

“We advise consumers to think carefully before entering personal data into any lead generation website, in case this information is passed on without their knowledge.”

All 19 firms have ‘UK’ in their website addresses, but appear to be registered in India or, in one case, New Zealand.

The OFT is actively keeping an eye on the case.
